Tesla is trying to accomplish self-driving cars in the US and possibly in Europe by the end of 2022, Elon Musk says. Achieving full autonomy for Tesla vehicles and getting the SpaceX Starship into orbit are his main goals—the ones that keep him awake at night, he said.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk spoke at the ONS 2022 Energy Conference on Monday, where he talked about many important issues. In addition to the topic of sustainable energy, which is a key topic at the conference, Musk also spoke about Tesla cars. In the conversation, he said he hopes to have Tesla's autonomous driving technology ready by the end of 2022, which should be available in the US and Europe if it gets regulatory approval.

“Have self-driving in wide release at least in the US, and ... potentially in Europe, depending on regulatory approval,” Musk told the audience.

Making cars autonomous is one of Musk's main ongoing challenges, along with getting SpaceX Starship into orbit. The technology that Tesla is developing has no analogs in the field. While such technology usually relies on sensors and radars, Tesla uses only cameras to make their cars move on their own. FSD Beta, which is currently being tested by over 100,000 participants, is performing well, although there is still room for improvement. Version 10.69.2 is expected to be released in a few weeks and will show significant improvements.

“The two technologies I am focused on, trying to ideally get done before the end of the year, are getting our Starship into orbit ... and then having Tesla cars to be able to do self-driving.”
