Tesla's Chinese customers have been waiting for deliveries to begin in late 2020. However, due to COVID-19, the company was not able to ramp up production as quickly as planned, leaving customers around the world outside the US to wait quite a while for deliveries. The first signs that Tesla is preparing to start deliveries of Model S and Model X to China appeared in October 2022. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) approved the exemption of these vehicles from purchase tax. In January 2023, Tesla announced new prices for cars, while opening the possibility of ordering for China.
