Tesla Model Y became the top-selling SUV in China in March and Q1 2022, once again confirming the local population’s love for the compact SUV. Despite the fact that Giga Shanghai did not operate at full capacity, the company was able to meet demand at the highest level.

In the Chinese market, Model Y sales in March were 39,730 units, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). This made the car the best-selling SUV, demonstrating the dramatic change the American manufacturer has brought to the country. This number of units sold corresponds to an increase of 291.4% compared to the same period last year, when Tesla registered 10,151 units. This is also 113.7% more than in February, when 18,593 units were registered.

Tesla Model Y has become the undisputed SUV sales leader in China, beating its closest competitor by over 13,000 units, which only underscores the Chinese’s love for it. In second place is BYD Song with 26,723 units. Changan CS75 finished third with 22,811 sales. Although Chinese SUVs are much more affordable, it is clear that the Chinese prefer to buy first of all a quality product, even if it will cost them much more.

According to CPCA data, in the first three months of the first quarter of 2022, Tesla Model Y retail sales in China amounted to 74,681 units. This is 354.8% more than the 16,422 units in the same period last year. Such popularity also made it the best-selling SUV in China for the first quarter of the year. BYD Song, nearly 1,000 units behind, came in second with 73,704 units, and Haval H6 third with 71,411.
