Tesla made a significant contribution to China's victory as the world's largest car exporter in the first quarter of 2023. The country became the leader for the first time after Tesla ramped up production at a local factory.

The demand for electric vehicles continues to grow. This has made a difference in which countries are now the top sellers on the world stage. While cars with internal combustion engines ruled alone in the automotive market, Germany and Japan were the leaders in exports. However, the switch to electric vehicles, which is actively developing in China, has put the country ahead in the number of car exports.

Official data released by the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China last week shows that China exported 1.07 million vehicles in Q1 2023, up 58% from the first quarter of 2022. Meanwhile, Japan's car exports stood at 954,185 units, up 6% year-over-year (via BBS). In 2022, China overtook Germany to become the world's second largest car exporter. 2023 also started for China on a positive note.

The move away from fossil-fuel vehicles has contributed to the development of China's automotive industry. New energy vehicle (NEV) exports, including electric vehicles, were up more than 90% in the first quarter from a year earlier.

It should be noted that such an increase in the number of exports was largely due to the Chinese division of Tesla, SAIC, and BYD. In the first three months of this year, Chinese car exports totaled 1.07 million units, while Japan exported 955,000 cars.

The difference as a result was 115,000 cars. Notably, Giga Shanghai exported 92,000 vehicles in Q1 2023, nearly matching the difference that propelled the country into first place. Currently, the Tesla factory has a production capacity of 1.25 million vehicles and will expand in the future.
