Over the past few years, people have started carrying far fewer items. With the advent of smartphones, we stopped needing wallets, credit cards, and garage fobs. Using a phone is also not always especially convenient, and smartwatches came to its aid. They can perform almost all the functions of a phone, and are more convenient to use.

Tesla owners have long been members of the club of select people who can open their cars with a card key or smartphone. But, if there was an opportunity to open the car using a smartwatch, it would be completely perfect in the modern world.

Tesla owners have been discussing this for a long time and asked the company for an app that would connect their car and smartwatch. A Reddit user wrote that it would be great to abandon the fob and use only his Apple Watch to open the car.

Another platform user replied that Tesla will introduce the WatchOS app soon.

"Tesla will have a WatchOS app out soon. Basic design and basic UI is done."

At the moment, there is no hard evidence that this is true and the Reddit user has not provided any further information to support his claim.

But, in late June, Apple revealed a new feature in iOS 14 that will allow (some) users to ditch their car keys. The idea is pretty simple. You pair your phone with your car — assuming your vehicle supports this new standard — and from then on you can use the device to unlock and start your car, Ars Technica reports.

The digital key communicates with your car via near-field communication (NFC) and is stored in the same secure enclave that your iPhone uses to store credit cards. That means it's protected by Face ID or Touch ID, although there is an Express Mode option that allows you to skip authentication.

If Tesla does develop and deliver such an app, then car owners will be even more satisfied with the brand, further improving upon an already stellar ownership experience.
