At The Boring Company development site near Austin, Texas, equipment and a new pit were spotted. Recently it became known that the company proposed to Austin to build an underground tunnel between downtown and the airport.

KXAN reported that Tesla and The Boring Company CEO Elon Musk recently met with representatives from the city of Austin. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss a proposal for the potential construction of an underground transport tunnel. According to the plan, the tunnel would connect the Tesla Gigafactory, airport, and downtown Austin. The city’s Development Services Department said the company presented the proposed tunnel to them and tried to get a good understanding of the permitting requirements.

Inspired by the news, Tesla Giga Texas construction progress observer Jeff Roberts/Twitter visited the development site of The Boring Co. in Bastrop, just outside of Austin. What he saw there did not disappoint. The drone flyover showed that there is various equipment on the territory, including the one for drilling tunnels. In addition, there was a freshly dug small pit, the purpose of which, at the moment, remains unknown.

The Austin underground tunnel was first mentioned in September 2020. Musk responded to one of the tweets in which he was asked to build a tunnel under Giga Texas. Surely, already at that moment he already had this idea, which he is now trying to convert into reality.

Just two months later, The Boring Co. posted a job advertisement in Austin, with a playful appeal: "Rumor has it that" Austin Chalk "is geologically one of best soils for tunneling. Want to find out? Austin jobs now available." In December, the company acquired 40,000 square feet of industrial land not far away from Giga Texas, in Pflugerville. In May 2021, The Boring Co. purchased 73 acres of land in northwest Bastrop through Gapped Bass LLC.

Here we can see gradual and steady progress towards the construction of the underground tunnel in Austin that will connect Giga Texas—which will have thousands of workers—with  downtown and the congested airport. If this succeeds, then Austin has every chance to gradually become one of the most innovative and well-developed cities in the United States.
