Twitter will provide a free write-only API to bots providing good content, said Elon Musk. For everyone else, starting February 9, the platform will stop supporting free access to the Twitter API and will offer a paid basic tier instead.

On Wednesday, Twitter announced that it will no longer support free access to the Twitter API. The change will take effect on February 9 and will apply to both v2 and v1.1. Instead, the platform will make the paid basic tier available. The move comes as part of Twitter's broader fight against bots, which are present on the platform in large numbers, ruining the experience of using the social network and engaging in dishonest activities.

However, there are many bots on Twitter that provide good, quality, and useful content for free. Thousands of people turned to the company with a request not to close their activities. In response to the feedback received, on Sunday, Elon Musk said that Twitter “will enable a light, write-only API for bots providing good content that is free.”

This means that some bots, which will need to pass verification, can continue to provide value and entertainment to Twitter users, without the company charging developers for their activities. At the same time, other developers will be forced to pay monthly price, which is not only fair but also useful, as part of the fight against developers using the Twitter API for bad purposes, such as fraud, spreading false information, promoting certain opinions, etc.
