Tesla has raised the top speed of Autosteer to 85 mph. The update shows that Tesla Vision is making new progress in development and its cameras, neural networks, and software are up to the task.

Tesla has begun rolling out a new software update that has seen an increase in the top speed of Autopilot for vehicles with Tesla Vision to 85 mph. This comes days after the company's CEO, Elon Musk, promised a top speed increase on May 15, 2022. This increase in top speed indicates that the company has been successful with its development. Driving on Autopilot at 85 mph is a very good indicator in itself, demonstrating that cameras, neural networks, and software are able to process information very quickly and efficiently, guaranteeing safe driving. Tesla originally started offering a maximum speed of 75 mph and later raised it to 80 mph. Ultimately, the manufacturer aims to provide its vehicles with the ability to drive Autopilot at a maximum speed of 90 mph.

Starting May 2021, Tesla began delivering Model 3 and Model Y for the North American market without radar. Instead, they all relied only on video cameras and neural network processing to provide Autopilot, Full-Self Driving, and certain active safety features. As of mid-February 2022, all Model S and Model X built for the North American market also utilize Tesla Vision. The idea was to switch to using only camera-based computer vision when using Autopilot. Thus, Tesla refused to use input from both cameras and radars, since their data could contradict each other, which in itself created a problem. Cameras are a more reliable source of information, so they were chosen as the only source of input data.
