The NYPD is considering buying 250 Tesla Model 3s. New York City could invest around $12.4 million in electric vehicles from the Texas-based manufacturer.
According to the draft of the procurement contract viewed by Bloomberg News at city offices on Wednesday, as part of a citywide campaign to move to an all-electric fleet, the agency is considering buying vehicles from Tesla. The cost of one car will be $51,940. While the city has yet to commit to procurement, the contract, which was due to be negotiated at a hearing on Thursday, could be valued at around $12.4 million.
Local and federal governments are increasingly electrifying their vehicle fleets to meet climate targets. In addition, electric vehicles are expected to have lower maintenance costs and better fuel economy compared to models with internal combustion engines.
News of New York’s plans to make this major purchase of electric vehicles from Tesla first broke last week. According to a record, the signing of a contract between the NYC Department of City Administration and Tesla for the purchase of Tesla Model 3s, which will be delivered within 5 years, is discussed. The total amount of the contract is $12,360,000.
“IN THE MATTER OF a proposed contract between the Department of Citywide Administrative Services of the City of New York and Tesla, Inc., located at 3500 Deer Creek Rd., Palo Alto, CA 94304, for procuring Tesla Model 3 All-Electric Sedans. The contract is in the amount of $12,360,000.00. The term of the contract shall be five years from date of Notice of Award.PIN #: 8572200042, E-PIN #: 05622S0005001.
The proposed contractor has been selected by Sole Source Procurement Method, pursuant to Section 3-05 of the Procurement Policy Board Rules.”
The EVs purchase could come as New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), and the Mayor's Office of Climate and Sustainability, announced a $75 million investment in EVs and EV charging infrastructure in late September 2021 to support the City of New York's vehicle fleet.
As described on the Official Website of the City of New York, investments include:
- 300 electric vehicles to replace fossil fuel-powered models
- 275 fast vehicle chargers
- 20 portable vehicle chargers
- 11 new solar charging carports
- 3 electric buses to replace diesel models
- 78 electric ambulances
- In addition, the City will retrofit 125 existing diesel-powered trucks to be electric-powered.
