Study Confirms Tesla CEO Elon Musk's View on Remote Work

While some people continue to resent Tesla for requiring all workers who went to work from home to return to the office, a study shows that Elon Musk is right in his view of the issue. The study shows that the efficiency of 71% of office workers significantly drops when they work remotely.

Earlier this month, a leaked internal email sent by Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed that the company is pushing for all employees to return to their workplaces in the office. While the media tried to cast it in a negative light en masse, corroborating their articles with the stories of disgruntled, unnamed employees of the company, the evidence indicates that such a move by the head of the company was the right one. A study conducted among the 100 largest South Korean companies shows that when working remotely, the overall work efficiency of employees drops compared to their work in the office.

The study was conducted among companies, 88.4% of which implemented work-from-home programs in 2020, 91.5% in 2021 and 72.7% this year. According to data from the Korea Enterprise Federation (KEF), the perceived productivity of working from home has been declining over time. 30.6% of respondents said that the perceived productivity of working from home is between 80% and 90% compared to when they worked in an office, and 29% said that working from home is 90% or higher. 21% said they were between 70% and 79% productive at home compared to working in the office, while 19.4% said they were below 70%. Thus, 71% of remote employees worked with significantly reduced efficiency.

While for a number of companies, the decrease in the efficiency of their employees may not yet play a significant role, this is unacceptable for a number of other companies. For example, for Tesla, which is an actively developing company, this form of work is inappropriate. Tesla is an innovative company that releases a lot of great new products, so the active work of every employee is a must. The manufacturer “has and will create and actually manufacture the most exciting and meaningful products of any company on Earth. This will not happen by phoning it in,” Musk wrote in an email to employees. And he is 100% right about that.

In fact, inefficient employees hinder the progress of entire company, thereby harming the areas in which they develop. That is why it is very important that each person has a profession and holds a position in accordance with their life aspirations and does not take a job that does not suit them.
