Tesla became the world's best-selling EV brand in 2021 with a 14.4% market share. The manufacturer's sales were so strong that the nearest competitor fell behind by almost a half.

In 2021, Tesla achieved very high performance, doubling its car production and sales figures. With its tireless work, the company showed the entire automotive industry that even with a shortage of components, the company can produce a large number of cars. So, as a result of its efforts, the manufacturer delivered 936,172 electric vehicles, occupying a 14.4% share of the global EV market and became the only automotive company in the world with a market share exceeding 10%. This number of units sold rightfully made Tesla the best-selling brand in the EV market worldwide in 2021.

In fact, no other EV manufacturer even came close to Tesla last year. The closest competitor of the Texas-based manufacturer is BYD, which sold 593,878 electric vehicles, according to data released by CleanTechnica. A whopping 342,294 behind makes a big difference. In third place is SGMW, which sold 456,123 electric vehicles last year. Fourth place went to Volkswagen with 319,735 units. Closing out the top 5 was BMW with 276,037 sales.

This brings cumulative global electric vehicle sales to almost 6.5 million in 2021, reflecting a 108% increase from the prior year. The total sales of the top 20 brands were 4,763,400 units, accounting for 73.3% of all global sales. As the impact of component shortages wanes, there is hope that automotive companies will show higher EV production performance in 2022. Tesla is expected to produce about 1.5 million vehicles this year, helping EVs capture a bigger share of the automotive market by further replacing internal combustion engine vehicles.
